We’ve all heard of them. And, if we’re honest with ourselves, I think it’s safe to say (unfortunately) that we’ve all said more than a few in our lifetimes. Even toddlers know how to lie and hide things from others, especially their parents. Why do we have this tendency to lie? Where does it come from? And if it’s just a small lie here or there…(why) does it even matter?
Pray: that the God of truth and righteousness would convict you in any areas of your life where you are not being completely honest and upright
Read: Proverbs 12:13-22
Applications: The proverbs of Solomon are full of contrasts between the wicked and the righteous. Particularly in these verses, Solomon highlights the importance of speaking the truth at all times. He emphasizes the wickedness of lying lips and tongues. I don’t know about you, but reading this was pretty convicting to me. I realized that even in the small things, I’ll sometimes lie without even thinking about it or realizing it, and then I feel too stupid or ashamed to fess up right after. We need to stop being complacent about these supposed “white lies”; any form of dishonesty is dishonoring to God! He holds us to a higher standard, and rightly so; He hates every type of sin, and He warns us against them for our own good.
Pray: that the Holy Spirit would keep your lips from lying and would help you to think before you utter a word, so you can make sure you know what you’re saying and that it’s truthful
