Day 28: Trusting a Christian? What about trusting God?

Our faith, theoretically, is very simple; Listen to God and Obey. Simply put, in the Old Testament, we are handed Ten Commandments to follow and obey. But, obeying, in itself, is already a struggle that each of us cannot overcome. From the moment we wake up, we already sin. Whether we choose to hit the snooze button, or tell our parents that we have indeed gotten out of bed when we actually haven’t, we are suffering from a life of sin. No matter how big or small the sin is, we still fall short. So what does scripture say about trusting AND obeying God?

Pray: Pray for obedience to the Holy Spirit. The spirit “fills” us with a faith of servitude. Ask God to fill you with His Holy Spirit.

Read: Exodus 20:1-20

Questions: Why must we not worship any other gods or idols? (v. 5) Why does god call Himself ‘jealous’?

Why would the people be afraid to speak first to God and ask Moses to be in their place? (v. 19)

Consider how Moses intercedes on the people’s behalf and compare it to Jesus’ role in our lives. how do we use Jesus to speak on our behalf?

Read over the Ten Commandments and try to recite them from memory. Why would these commandments be needed in the first place?

Application: Obeying is hard. but trusting is even harder. We can always read over the rules of our life engagement; don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t steal. It isn’t hard to follow these rules as long as they don’t conflict with what we think is right, but often times; God intervenes to correct our sense of righteousness, or often times, our sense of self-righteousness. In this passage the people are so fearful of God speaking to them because they realize their imperfections and inadequacies. They’re unworthy of His commandments and are afraid of His discerning judgment.

“He wants you to respect him so you will not sin.” Exodus 20:20 — We are called to respect, to trust His judgment. How can you wholeheartedly obey God’s will when you don’t trust Him? Trust builds when we completely surrender the idols of our lives to Him. The passage says many times, “Me first, and no other gods or idols.” What idols do you have in your life?

Pray: What idols have you been harboring in life? Is there an area of your life that you’re afraid to surrender to God, that you’re afraid to trust Him with? If you can’t trust the almighty god, who loves and cares for you, who can you trust?
